Are Loofah Toys Safe for Cats? A Vet-Reviewed Guide

Short answer: Yes — when sourced and made correctly, loofah cat toys are one of the safest, most natural toys on the market. Here is the long answer, vet-reviewed and based on the actual science of Luffa cylindrica.

What is loofah, exactly?

Loofah is not a sea sponge. It is the dried, fibrous interior of a cucumber-family gourd (Luffa cylindrica) that grows on a vine in warm climates. When the gourd is harvested late, peeled, washed, and sun-dried, what remains is a tough, mesh-like vegetable fiber — the same material your grandmother used to scrub the kitchen sink before plastic scrubbers existed.

Is loofah safe if my cat eats a piece?

Plain, untreated loofah is plant cellulose. It is not toxic to cats. Small amounts of loofah fiber will pass through your cat's digestive system the same way grass or vegetable fiber would. Veterinary toxicology databases do not list Luffa cylindrica as a hazardous plant for cats or dogs.

Important caveats:

  • Like any toy, loofah pieces should not be swallowed in large chunks. Supervise vigorous chewers.
  • Avoid loofah toys treated with bleach, dyes, optical brighteners, or synthetic glues — these are the actual safety risks, not the loofah itself.
  • If your cat has a history of intestinal blockages, choose chunkier toys (like our Pineapple Hideout) over fiber-shedding toys.

How loofah compares to common cat toy fillers

Material Plant-based? Compostable? Microplastic shedding?
Polyester fluff (most cat toys) No No Yes — significant
Felted wool Animal-based Slow None
Recycled plastic mesh No No Yes
Loofah Yes Yes (~6 weeks) None

What about the catnip inside?

Catnip (Nepeta cataria) and silvervine (Actinidia polygama) are safe, non-addictive, and well-documented in veterinary literature. About 1 in 3 cats does not respond to catnip — silvervine works for many of those non-responders. We use USDA-organic, single-origin catnip with no fillers.

The Paw Accio safety standard

  1. We source whole, mature loofah gourds from small farms — never reject pieces from sponge-factory floor scrap.
  2. No bleach. No chemical softening. Loofah is washed in clean water and sun-dried.
  3. Hand-stitched with undyed cotton thread. No glue, no plastic clips.
  4. Catnip and silvervine are USDA-organic, lab-tested for mycotoxins.
  5. Every batch is hand-inspected before packing.

How to introduce a loofah toy to your cat

If your cat has only known synthetic toys, the texture is new. Try this:

  1. Rub the toy briefly between your hands to release the catnip aroma.
  2. Place it where your cat already plays — not somewhere new.
  3. Toss it once, then walk away. Cats often need to "discover" a new toy on their own terms.
  4. After play, store the toy in a sealed bag or jar. The catnip aroma fades faster in open air.

The bigger picture

The pet toy industry produces an estimated 300+ million pounds of plastic toy waste each year in the US alone. Most of these toys end up in landfills within months. A loofah toy, by contrast, was a vine three months ago — and in six weeks of compost, it returns to soil that grows the next vine.

This is what we mean by "the only pet brand that grows its toys." Not a slogan. A supply chain.
